A Chat About ChatGPT (and Other Generative AI Tools)

Meeting Room B
Thursday, Apr 25, 2024, 7:00pm to 8:00pm

Generative artificial intelligence has quickly become a regular news topic and part of our lives in ways we may not even realize. But what exactly is it, and what are the consequences for society? UW-Madison Librarian Dave Bloom will introduce the background and functionality behind generative AI, demonstrate some of its everyday uses, discuss the benefits and drawbacks of this technology, and answer questions.

About the presenter: Dave Bloom is a Science & Engineering Librarian at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Libraries. Having held this position since 2016, he also serves as representative for the UW’s Patent & Trademark Resource Center, a nationally coordinated program that offers support to aspiring entrepreneurs and others interested in intellectual property. Dave has been tracking developments in generative AI since the popularization of ChatGPT in early 2023 and is chiefly interested in the impact of publicly available generative AI tools on how we search for and engage with information.
